Will BJP Take the TMC Rebels or Keep Them Outside? (UPDATED)

Reports indicate that around 10 to 12 Trinamool Congress MPs met BJP leaders in Delhi on June 7, even as Mamata Banerjee attended the INDIA alliance meeting, sparking speculation about a possible split in the party's parliamentary wing. However, questions loom over whether the BJP will formally accept these rebels and break the TMC in Parliament. BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya has stated the party is in no hurry to induct TMC leaders and has kept its door closed for now, while other reports suggest the BJP is not currently accepting applications from TMC MPs. The anti-defection law creates significant legal hurdles, as a split requires at least two-thirds of legislators to avoid disqualification, and TMC leaders are pointing to these procedural constraints. The more plausible scenario appears to be tactical engagement rather than immediate absorption, with BJP testing loyalties and keeping pressure on Mamata without a formal takeover unless a much larger breakaway materializes. This cautious approach allows the BJP to maintain political leverage while avoiding immediate parliamentary complications that could arise from a rushed induction of rebel MPs.
